William Stanley Staewen

William Stanley Staewen, 91, passed away on September 19, 2025. A devoted father and husband to the late Jean L. Staewen, Bill was a pioneering clinical engineer and co-inventor of the Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator (ICD). A Johns Hopkins graduate, he worked over 30 years in medical engineering, including leadership roles at Johns Hopkins and Sinai Hospital. Widely recognized for advancing patient electrical safety and device standards, he was inducted into the NASA Space Technology Hall of Fame and received the Michel Mirowski Award. A prolific contributor to the field, he served in numerous leadership and editorial roles with AAMI and authored over 50 publications.
