After more than 80 years, Private First-Class Lawrence Richard “Dick” Beard of Westminster, Maryland, is returning home. An active-duty member of the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, PFC Beard enlisted on February 18, 1941. He was captured during the fall of the Philippines in 1942 and endured the brutal Bataan Death March before dying as a POW at Cabanatuan Camp on November 4, 1942. Originally buried in a common grave, his remains were recently identified through scientific analysis. He is being welcomed home with full honors and the deepest gratitude for his sacrifice.
