Carroll Community College has announced a new partnership with Vehicles for Change, a nonprofit organization known for providing affordable, reliable cars to low-income families while also offering hands-on automotive training for individuals preparing to enter the workforce.

Since its founding in 1999, VFC has awarded more than 8,000 vehicles and positively impacted more than 26,000 lives. The organization reports that recipients often increase their annual earnings by thousands of dollars and drastically reduce commute times.

The partnership arrives at a time when local families continue to face transportation challenges that limit access to jobs, childcare, and healthcare. VFC’s impact is evident in the donor and recipient stories that shape its mission.

College leadership says the collaboration reflects a shared mission. “This partnership with Vehicles for Change reflects our shared commitment to creating real pathways to opportunity,” said Kelly Koermer, Vice President of Workforce, Business & Community Education at Carroll Community College. She noted that by combining transportation support with job training, the program helps residents move toward “employment, education, and a better quality of life.”

Barbara, a longtime donor, described her family’s decision to give their vehicles to VFC as a way to honor her late husband, John, whose life’s work centered on empowering others. She said her most recent donation was “a way to keep John’s spirit alive” and ensure that his commitment to helping others continues.

Recipients echo the life-changing effect of reliable transportation. Lisa, a mother of three, recalled the moment she received her VFC vehicle after years of struggling without one. She said she felt “pure relief for herself and for her kids,” calling the car the beginning of the stability she needed to build her career, return to college, and eventually create a workforce development program of her own.

As a sponsor, Carroll Community College will help identify eligible families and encourage local residents to donate cars—running or not. The College notes that community participation is key, a single donated vehicle can provide a family with the ability to reach work, school, and essential services.

The donation is tax-deductible, and the process begins on the Carroll Community College website, where community members can also find the Vehicles for Change Interest Form for those applying to receive a vehicle.
