Art At Noon: The Legacy of Nonggirrnga Marawili
Professor, researcher, and curator Dr. Henry Skerritt joins us for an illuminating talk on the history and influence of our winter Artist of Inspiration, Nonggirrnga Marawili — a celebrated Australian Yolngu painter and printmaker whose work has had a profound impact on contemporary Indigenous art. Dr. Skerritt will explore Marawili’s artistic legacy, cultural significance, and the broader context of Indigenous-led art histories.
Dr. Skerritt is Assistant Professor in the Department of Art and Curator of Research at the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection at the University of Virginia. His research focuses on the ways Indigenous artists and communities engage with art institutions, with particular emphasis on how Indigenous communities participate in shaping and curating their own art histories. He has contributed to more than twenty exhibitions across the United States and Australia.
