Taneytown may be thousands of miles from the shores of France, but you don’t have to travel beyond Carroll County to experience European cooking in Maryland.

Café Au Bouchon debuted on Dec. 19, 2025, at Venue Bouchon, which opened in 2021 and is owned and managed by Dominique and Jessica Mouton. The couple had been using off-site caterers to provide food services for the venue, which hosts special events and weddings.

After their son, Executive Chef Sebastien Mouton, graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 2024, the Moutons decided it was time to bring cooking back into the family business.

The café became a natural extension of Venue Bouchon’s hospitality. “We wanted to bring the experience that you get in France, Belgium and Europe when you go to a restaurant,” Sebastien says. “We want to open our guests’ eyes to new experiences with food.”

Last April, the Moutons traveled throughout northern France to study the region’s food, wine, and culture, bringing inspiration from the country and its cuisine home to Carroll County and Venue Bouchon.

Café Au Bouchon offers a dine-in prix-fixe menu that celebrates the history and traditions of fine French food. Dishes on the menu come from Sebastien’s culinary training and his father Dominique’s Belgian roots.

Order the Moules Marinières, and you’ll savor the flavors of prime-quality Prince Edward Island mussels. Be prepared to soak up the rich broth accompanying the mussels, flavored with celery, white wine, and fresh herbs, with slices of warm bread.

Sebastien’s take on Coquilles Saint-Jacques perches perfectly cooked sea scallops atop braised endive and a trout roe beurre blanc.

Entrées range from meat to seafood, all carefully prepared with only the freshest ingredients available. From a poached salmon with hollandaise to a seared pork loin brined in herbs, each creation that comes from the kitchen to the table is like art on the plate.

Desserts, too, offer edible masterpieces for any occasion. While you can’t go wrong with a classic French dessert like crème brûlée, the Tulip en Chocolat à la Mousse de Framboises is every bit as beautiful as it is delicious.

Slide your spoon into a Belgian raspberry mousse nestled in a dark chocolate tulip cup, served with Chantilly crème and fresh berries.

In addition to the dining space that hosts guests for lunch and dinner, a recently opened cocktail lounge within the venue offers a comfortable place to unwind before or after dinner.

Sink into leather chairs with friends or take a seat at the bar to sip a crafted cocktail, mocktail, or glass of wine while enjoying some tasty lounge bites, such as truffle fries, Escargot de Bourgogne (Burgundy snails baked in a compound butter) or an artichoke tartine.

Sebastien says the response to Café Au Bouchon from the community has been “phenomenal. A vast majority of our guests are from Taneytown and the Carroll County area,” he says.

“We get people from as far away as Alexandria, Virginia, and Baltimore — people are driving almost two hours to come see us.” The next time you want to dine deliciously locally, navigate your taste buds to Taneytown and discover exquisite European specialties at Café Au Bouchon.
