For nearly five decades, Dr. Barbara Gray has helped organizations navigate conflict, foster collaboration, and find paths toward healing. An internationally recognized organizational sociologist, author, consultant, and educator, her leadership continues to make an impact both around the world and now within the Fairhaven community she now proudly calls home.
A former professor at Penn State University, Gray was the first woman on the research track in her college to earn tenure. In 1989, she authored her first book, “Collaborating”, and later received multiple lifetime achievement awards for her work in organizational conflict resolution. Today, she remains active as a founding partner and consultant at An Olive Branch, helping organizations in ethical crises to heal and to train staff at organizations such as Greenpeace International to collaborate.
Since moving to Fairhaven with her husband in November 2024, Gray has embraced opportunities to connect with others and share her Buddhist practice. A trained Lay Zen Teacher, she began a popular weekly Mindful Meditation group at the community.
Residents enjoy learning mindfulness techniques that help them navigate life’s challenges with greater peace of mind. “We’ve built a group of people who enjoy practicing regularly,” Gray says. “We talk about how life is impacting us and how to be as present as we can.”
Gray and her husband were drawn to Fairhaven’s beautiful landscape, walking trails, and cottage lifestyle. Their Japanese-inspired garden, featured in the photo accompanying this article, has become a peaceful gathering point admired by neighbors.
“Both my husband and I are happy to have made a number of new friends so quickly and easily,” she says. “We’ve met a lot of lovely people, and we’re glad we moved to Fairhaven.”
