I grew up in Carroll County, left for a bit, and then found my way back when it was time to raise kids of my own. And every summer, like clockwork, the memories come rushing in—grilled burgers at Cascade Lake, the boom of fireworks over the Farm Museum, and of course… carnival season.
Now, I don’t know if every county does summer quite like Carroll does, but here, it’s practically a rite of passage. Every week, a different town lights up with the glow of a firehouse carnival. These aren’t just for fun (though there’s plenty of that); they’re the heartbeat of our local fire companies—fundraisers that pay for new equipment and capital projects. And while that might be the grown-up reason to support them, the kid version? It’s all about the thrill and sugar high.
As a child, the Reese Fire Company carnival was a staple in my summer. It always landed around my birthday in late July, in that field off Route 140. Armed with a few bucks and a pack of friends, we’d roam ride to ride with no parents in sight, fueled by funnel cake and freedom. It was magic.
Fast forward a couple of decades and guess where I took my kids in late July? Yep. Gave them some cash and let them loose, just like my parents did for me. Same sugar highs, same dizzy rides, same sense of summer joy. (OK, maybe fewer goldfish survived.)
The Reese carnival now pops up June 23-28, but the summer lineup is packed. So here’s my challenge to you: If you’re a longtime local, check out a carnival you’ve never been to. If you’re new to Carroll, pick one—any one—and dive in. Even if rides and raffles aren’t your thing, the fried Oreos alone are worth the trip. And hey, it’s all for a good cause.
Here’s to a summer filled with Ferris wheels, bright lights, and belly laughs. Stay safe out there and tell me which carnival is your favorite.
Cheers!
