In the heart of Carroll County, Maryland, a remarkable story is unfolding—one of courage, collaboration, and community spirit. On April 1, 2025, the Community Media Center (CMC) announced a project destined to inspire: a 60-minute documentary titled Thriving Together: The Power of Inclusion. This isn’t just a film. It’s a movement. And it’s turning the spotlight on a group that’s long overdue for a standing ovation—the intellectually and developmentally disabled (IDD) individuals who are living, working, and thriving among us.
Slated for a public premiere on December 2, 2025, at the Carroll Arts Center in Westminster, the film is a celebration of talent, determination, and the unstoppable power of support. Produced by CMC in collaboration with The Arc Carroll County, Target Community & Educational Services, Bello Machre, and Penn-Mar, Thriving Together aims to shatter old stereotypes and replace them with stories that shine with hope and humanity.
“This documentary provides a powerful lens into the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” said Richard Turner, CEO of the Community Media Center. “It’s about their talents, their contributions, and the mutual benefits of inclusion.”
Indeed, for too long, society has misunderstood what it means to live with an intellectual or developmental disability. Stereotypes and biases have often led to prejudice or pity. But what if the narrative changed? What if instead of focusing on what someone can’t do, we celebrated what they can?
That’s exactly what Thriving Together sets out to do.
At the heart of this documentary are the personal stories—the small triumphs that become big accomplishments, the everyday heroes living courageously, and the agencies working tirelessly behind the scenes to lift people up. These organizations aren’t just service providers—they’re life-changers. And they each bring something special to the table.
“We are honored to be part of this groundbreaking documentary,” said Jen Johnson of The Arc Carroll County. “We hope to encourage greater awareness, support, and inclusion for the IDD community.”
The Arc has been a cornerstone of support since 1955, helping individuals with IDD pursue independence, achieve their goals, and live meaningful lives. And they’re not alone.
Target Community & Educational Services, founded in 1983, is known for its unique partnership with McDaniel College. “We are excited to highlight our collaboration,” said Gail Slater of Target. “Everyone deserves a place at the table.” Their hands-on graduate program in Human Services Management is shaping the next generation of advocates and leaders.
Then there’s Bello Machre—whose very name, Gaelic for “home of my heart,” tells you everything you need to know about their mission. “We believe stories have the power to change perceptions,” said Hunter Jackson. “This project creates the opportunity to spark real conversations, promote empathy, and inspire action.”
Penn-Mar, too, is lending its powerful voice to the project. Supporting nearly 2,000 adults with IDD each year, their motto is clear: live courageously in pursuit of your best life. “The collaboration’s purpose is to inspire everyone,” said Danielle Gattine, “with the support of their team: providers, DSPs, family, and friends.”
And that’s where Thriving Together really shines. It’s not just about the people on screen. It’s about everyone—the community, the co-workers, the neighbors. It’s about seeing each other with clearer eyes and fuller hearts.
The documentary’s release is only the beginning. Once launched, it will be available for use by schools, leadership programs, and advocacy groups to build empathy, education, and community bridges far beyond Carroll County.
But the project needs more than applause—it needs support. CMC is actively developing sponsorship and fundraising efforts to help ensure this story reaches the widest audience possible. Every dollar, every share, every screening helps fuel the message: inclusion is not just possible—it’s powerful.
From offices and classrooms to living rooms and coffee shops, Thriving Together invites all of us to reflect, connect, and take action. Because when everyone has a seat at the table, we don’t just thrive—we rise.
