The smell of smoked pulled pork and the sound of laughter filled the air on October 17 as the Silver Run Community Food Pantry held a festive BBQ picnic hosted by St. Mary’s United Church of Christ. The event, held at the St. Mary’s Lutheran Church pavilion, brought together pantry guests, volunteers, and community partners for an evening focused on gratitude and connection.

Approximately 40 guests attended the gathering, with take-home meals provided for families—serving a total of 32 families who participate in the Silver Run Community Food Pantry. Along with the freshly prepared meal, several boxes of pork products were distributed and set aside for future pantry dates to benefit even more households.

“It wasn’t just a picnic—it was a beautifully done event,” said Brenda Meadows, Executive Director of The Shepherd’s Staff. “The atmosphere was festive and fall-like, and you could see people’s spirits lifted. There was laughter, smiles, and a sense of celebration. It was truly special.”

The food was provided thanks to the efforts of a 4-H student who raised the hog, which was purchased by St. Mary’s UCC. The butchering and preparation were donated, turning the meal into a meaningful act of community giving.

The event was made possible through the collaboration of St. Mary’s UCC and St. Mary’s Lutheran Church. Volunteers prepared and served the meal, readied the pavilion, and provided desserts, drinks, and sides to round out the feast.

“This generous gift is rare—it’s something that touches so many lives at once,” Meadows added. “The collective excitement of our guests spoke volumes about how meaningful it was.”

The Silver Run Community Food Pantry expressed deep gratitude to St. Mary’s UCC, St. Mary’s Lutheran Church, Pastor Sam, the 4-H donor, and the many volunteers who helped make the celebration possible.
