Carroll 250: Patriots of Carroll County Presentation at Carroll County Library
Carroll County residents will soon have the chance to step back into the 18th century as local historian John Laycock presents an in-depth look at the life and legacy of Normand Bruce, one of the region’s most influential early settlers. The program—open to ages 12 through adults—promises a vivid portrait of a man whose impact still echoes through the county he helped shape.
Bruce, a Scottish immigrant, built a remarkable career as a businessman, prominent landowner, soldier, politician, husband, and father. He is perhaps best remembered for answering the call during the American Revolution, serving as an officer in the Maryland militia. His footprint in Carroll County includes the founding of Bruceville and the construction of Myrtle Hill, the home he built in the 1760s which still stands today as a testament to his enduring presence.
The presentation will be led by John Laycock, a member of the Westminster Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and a board member of the Historical Society of Carroll County. Laycock is known for his engaging style and deep knowledge of local history, offering audiences both informative scholarship and compelling storytelling. Registration is required for this event.
