Hiking Into Fall: Explore Carroll County’s Trials During Peak Foliage Season

by Kym Byrnes

There’s nothing quite like fall in Carroll County. Crisp air, crunching leaves, and rolling hills painted in gold, crimson, and amber make autumn the perfect season to lace up your shoes and hit the trails.

From family-friendly paved paths to wooded hikes along lakes and streams, Carroll County Department of Recreation & Parks staff say there’s a trail for everyone.

Plan for the Perfect Hike

“About 90% of the trails in Carroll County just require a good pair of walking shoes,” explains Brad Rogers, division manager at Carroll County Recreation & Parks. “Really, only about 10% are more aggressive terrain and would need a sturdier shoe or light hiker.”

Hikers of every ability level have plenty of options for trails. In total, Carroll County offers approximately 20 miles of paved macadam trails spread throughout its parks, as well as an additional 50 miles of natural-surface trails. A little preparation before heading out makes all the difference.

“Do your research. Figure out what area of the county you want to hike in, look for local trails, call the park and ask for recommendations,” advises Dawn Harry, park manager at Hashawha Environmental Center and Bear Branch Nature Center near Westminster. “And always pay attention to the weather. Know the temperature, if storms are expected, and plan accordingly.”

Know What to Expect on the Trail

Rogers points out that all trails managed by the county are pet-friendly. Dogs are required to be on a leash no longer than 6 feet in length. Some trails allow for horses. According to Harry, hikers should observe some trail etiquette if they approach riders on horses.

“If you come across a horse on a trail, you should yield to the horse, and the rider will often provide direction so you can pass easily.”

Bikes are also allowed on some trails. Rogers says that the macadam trails are for pedestrian traffic. He notes that some small children on bikes with training wheels may be on macadam trails, which are not meant for adults on mountain or road bikes.

He says that strollers and wheelchairs are also acceptable, although not all macadam trails are ADA certified due to the presence of some slopes. No motorized vehicles are allowed on any of the trails. Class 1 e-bikes are allowed on trails, but motorized Class 2 and 3 bikes are not.

Take Extra Caution During Hunting Season

Rogers warns that hunting season is in the fall and advises all hikers to wear bright-colored clothing and be aware of safe times for hiking. “Double check to make sure the park and trail you are heading to is open,” Rogers says.

“Regardless of where you hike in the fall, wear bright-colored clothing and be mindful that some of the trails border private property.” Check the Maryland Department of Natural Resources website, DNR.Maryland.gov, to learn more about park hours during hunting season.

Discover Local Favorites for Fall Color

When it comes to favorite trails, park staffers admit they’re biased. “We all have our favorites,” Harry says with a laugh.

Hashawha Environmental Center, Westminster

Harry points to Hashawha as one of the most beautiful places to hike in the fall. “The Stream Trail runs right along Lake Hashawha, and the maples reflect their amazing colors on the water,” she says. “My favorite is Hickory Trail. It offers a lovely view of the Union Mills Recreation Area, the hills, and the forest.”

Morgan Run Environmental Area, between Westminster and Eldersburg

Morgan Run is renowned for its serene woodland trails and diverse wildlife. It’s a quieter option for those seeking solitude.

Patapsco Valley State Park, McKeldin Area, Marriottsville

For those who want a longer hike, McKeldin offers about eight miles of trails ranging from easy to moderate. The popular Switchback Trail ends at a dramatic overlook above Liberty Dam.

Piney Run Park, Sykesville

With about five miles of trails plus a larger 3.5-mile loop around the reservoir, Piney Run is a local favorite. “The Inlet Trail goes right along the water’s edge,” says Dylan Collins, manager at Piney Run Park. “If you go at the right time in the fall, you’ll see all of the colors reflected in the lake — it’s just stunning.”

Sandymount Park, Finksburg

Perfect for families or casual walkers, Sandymount offers about 1.4 miles of paved trail — great for strollers or a leisurely walk.

Union Mills Recreation Area, Westminster

Here’s another excellent choice for anyone who loves streams and creeks. Trails wind through wooded hillsides, providing a sense of solitude, especially as leaves begin to blanket the forest floor.

Follow a Few Practical Tips

  • Go early or late. Morning light and late-afternoon glow bring out the best in fall foliage.
  • Layer up. Carroll County’s weather can shift quickly in autumn.
  • Mornings may start brisk, but afternoons often warm up.
  • Pack water and snacks. Even short hikes are more enjoyable when you’re comfortable.
  • Leave no trace. Stay on marked trails, respect private property boundaries and take all of your trash with you.

Want to find more gems or those lesser-known trails? Piney Run Park Manager Dylan Collins says that county park staffers are always more than happy to discuss what’s available and can offer suggestions based on different times of year or a hiker’s skill level.

If you’re looking for something outside of the county-managed parks, consider using an app like AllTrails, which offers an extensive searchable database of trails that includes user reviews, trail conditions and photos.
