McDaniel College has expanded its Legacy Scholarship program to recognize the children of first responders, health professionals, and government employees in honor of National First Responders Day on October 28. The guaranteed scholarships, valued at up to $132,000 over four years, are open to eligible first-year and transfer students applying for fall 2026 admission.
The new First Responder Legacy Scholarship is available to children whose parent or guardian is an active law enforcement officer, career firefighter, licensed EMT or paramedic, or 911 dispatcher, with at least four consecutive years of current employment. Children of first responders who died in the line of duty are also eligible, regardless of years of service.
McDaniel is partnering with the First Responders Children’s Foundation, connecting scholarship recipients with the Foundation’s Scholars Council for support and mentorship.
President and CEO of First Responders Children’s Foundation Jillian Crane said, “We’re deeply grateful to McDaniel College for recognizing the children of first responders with this powerful commitment. Behind every first responder is a family that sacrifices right alongside them. By opening doors through education, McDaniel is not only honoring that service but investing in the next generation who carry that legacy forward. Through our Scholars Council, these students will find mentorship, community, and a network of support that extends far beyond financial aid. We’re proud to welcome McDaniel’s first responder scholars into the FRCF family.”
McDaniel is also introducing a Health Professional Legacy Scholarship for children of full-time health professionals, and a Public Servant Legacy Scholarship for children of government employees at the local, state, tribal, or federal levels with at least four years of consecutive employment.
“Over the last 10 years, McDaniel has introduced Legacy Scholarships to recognize the contributions of pre-K-12 and community college educators and past and present military service members,” added President Jasken. “These are among the largest scholarships that we offer incoming students, and we are grateful to our donors who have allowed us to continue to give back by making McDaniel an affordable option to these families who dedicate and sacrifice so much.”
The scholarships are renewable each year for students who maintain continuous enrollment and satisfactory academic progress. Residential students can receive up to $33,000 annually, while commuters can receive $22,000 annually, with no limit on the number of awards.
