In today’s fast-paced business world, it is critical to be able to learn new skills or technology quickly. There are several platforms that provide value in diverse ways.
Many of the most common online learning platforms are MOOCs, which are Massive Open Online Courses. MOOCs are typically free or very low-cost and you can take them anywhere, anytime. A MOOC is usually created by world-renowned experts from reputable institutions. Here are some of the most popular MOOCs:
Udemy
A popular online learning platform that offers a wide variety of courses on a variety of topics, including business, marketing, technology, and more. Courses are taught by experts in their field, and many of them are free or low-cost.
LinkedIn Learning
(formerly Lynda.com) Another great option for business learning. This platform offers a subscription-based service that gives you access to thousands of courses on business, technology, and creative topics.
Coursera
A non-profit online learning platform that offers courses from top universities and companies around the world. Courses are offered on a variety of topics, including business, computer science, and data science. Many of the courses are free or low-cost.
edX
Another non-profit online learning platform that offers courses from top universities and companies around the world. Courses are offered on a variety of topics, including business, computer science, and data science. Many of the courses are free or low-cost.
Thousands of people can enroll in a MOOC at the same time. So, they cannot be structured like a traditional course. You will likely not have personal access to the expert instructor and assignments are auto-graded or graded by your peers. MOOC learning is self-directed and self-paced. Some thrive in that environment, while others seek more structure. For those who want more structure and interaction with a teacher, look to your local college or university for expert instructor-led online or face-to-face professional development and technical training courses as an alternative platform for learning.
These platforms open the door to thousands of training opportunities. So, it is important to create a learning plan tailored to your needs. Start by setting some goals for yourself. What do you want to learn? How long do you want to spend learning? What are your learning objectives?
Once you know your goals, create a plan that identifies what platform will work best for you considering content, format, and budget. From there, identify the specific courses you’ll take that align with your goals, the amount of time you’ll spend each week, and how you’ll measure your progress. Include in your plan what support you will need from your employer and family to keep you on track. Share the plan with them and ask for support.
Learning new skills is an important part of staying ahead in the business world. By using one of the platforms mentioned above, you can quickly and easily learn the skills you need to succeed. So, what are you waiting for? Get started today!
