This is the third or so article on Ellsworth I have seen recently in various local publications, and it is interesting that most are often praising local adult organizations or groups which donate time, money and effort to this project.

I would refer you to the front page of the Carroll County Times on Monday, June 19, 2000 and an article entitled “History lives on at graveyard.” Mr. George Murphy first approached the Westminster High School Student Senate in May or June of 1999 and presented his case and concerns about the future of Ellsworth. He was looking for aid in cleaning up weeds and other debris so ground-penetrating radar could be used to identify gravesites. The student members of the organization really bought into his presentation and joined others from the community for a workday of clean-up at the cemetery. With much sweat, scratches from thorns, poison ivy and insect bites, they did a commendable job. But they carried it to another level when they had a fundraising effort the school year of 2000 and presented a check for $5,000 to the Union Memorial Baptist Church to continue the project.

I am writing this email because I was their faculty advisor and feel that our young adults are often not credited or acknowledged for their efforts to help others in their community.

Correction

The article on Ellsworth Cemetery in Westminster that appeared in the October/November issue misidentified the location of the cemetery. It lies along Route 140 between the Wawa store and Crossroads Church. Carroll Magazine regrets the error.
