Ways to Support Veterans & Service Members

by Kym Byrnes

Most Americans will never serve in the military, and many don’t know the sacrifices that come with being a part of a military family. Most of us will be able to sit down with family and friends at Thanksgiving this year because we have fellow Americans who are protecting our way of life all around the world. While military service isn’t the path many of us choose, there are ways that every American can support those who do choose to serve. Veterans Day is Nov. 11, and here are some ways to support veterans and those currently serving.

1. Support the Carroll County Veterans Independence Project

This local organization, created by local veterans in 2017, works to support the physical, mental and emotional well-being of veterans in a variety of ways. Consider donating or supporting their fundraisers, or inquire to find out about volunteer opportunities. Learn more about services provided and ways to support the organization at CarrollCountyVIP.org.

2. Support your local American Legions

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans.

Carroll County is home to five American Legion posts, and they all have fundraisers and events throughout the year. Some have facilities that provide bar/food/drink service and/or are available for event rental.

3. Support your local VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars)

The VFW is a nonprofit veterans service organization comprised of eligible veterans and military service members from the active, Guard and Reserve forces. The VFW and its Auxiliary are dedicated to veterans service, legislative advocacy, and military and community service programs.
Carroll County is home to four VFW posts, and they all have some type of fundraisers and events throughout the year. Some have facilities that provide bar/food/drink service and/or are available for event rental.

4. Support Operation Gratitude

Operation Gratitude is a nationwide nonprofit dedicated to providing people across the country with opportunities for hands-on volunteerism to say “thank you” to our military, veterans, and first responders. This organization accepts donations and has diverse opportunities for volunteering.

5. Support K9s for Warriors

Determined to end veteran suicide, K9s For Warriors provides trained service dogs to military veterans suffering from PTSD, traumatic brain injury and/or military sexual trauma. With the majority of dogs coming from high-kill rescue shelters, this innovative program allows the K9/Warrior team to build an unwavering bond that facilitates their collective healing and recovery.
