On Monday, July 14, 2025, Maryland Governor Wes Moore announced the appointment of Carroll County Commissioner Ed Rothstein as the next Secretary of the Department of Veterans and Military Families (DVMF).

Rothstein, a retired United States Army Colonel, is in his second term serving Carroll County’s District 5.  His over 30-year record of serving in the military positions him to excel in the role.

A press release issued from Governor Moore’s office noted, “Rothstein’s distinguished 30+ year military career included numerous deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan along with multiple duty stations worldwide…Following his military service, Rothstein served as Anne Arundel County’s economic developer and founded ERA Advisory LLC, a service-disabled, veteran-owned small business focused on giving back to the community. “

The press release continued, “prior to becoming Carroll County commissioner, Rothstein also served as executive director of the BWI Business Partnership…and has also served on multiple boards of directors…including the Carroll County Veterans Advisory Council which works to evaluate, develop and promote new and existing programs and services for veterans and their families within Carroll County.”

Commissioner Kiler, President of the Carroll County Board of Commissioners, said, “Ed has dedicated his life and career to public service. I am proud to call him a colleague and friend, and I know he will do a fantastic job representing Maryland as the Secretary of DVMF. I will miss him in Carroll, but I’m thrilled to know that, as Commissioner, I’ll still have the opportunity to work with Ed to provide excellent services to Carroll’s veterans and their families.

Commissioner Rothstein will start his new role on August 1, 2025. “It has been my honor to serve Carroll County District 5 for the past 7 years, said Rothstein.  I promise to bring the same work ethic, passion, and integrity to this new role.”  With 16 months remaining in his term, information about who will replace Rothstein as District 5 Commissioner and how the position is to be filled will be forthcoming.
