Carroll Community College will officially celebrate the opening of the new James D. Ball Athletic Field Complex on Thursday, September 17, during the Lynx soccer teams’ first home games of the season against Allegany College of Maryland.
The celebration begins at 3 p.m. with a kickoff event recognizing the partnerships and investments that made the $5.6 million project possible. The men’s soccer team will take the field at 4 p.m., followed by the women’s team at 6 p.m.
The new athletic complex is the result of a partnership between Carroll County Government, which contributed $2.4 million, and the Carroll Community College Foundation, which committed $3.2 million. College and county officials are also finalizing an operational agreement to guide use of the facility for both the campus and the broader community.
Designed to enhance student athletics while expanding recreational and event opportunities throughout Carroll County, the complex features a FieldTurf synthetic playing surface, an NJCAA regulation 400-meter, eight-lane Beynon running track, dedicated areas for track and field events, integrated bleacher seating, and Musco sports lighting for evening competitions and community events.
The College first broke ground on the project in October 2025, when the facility was officially named in honor of Emeritus President Dr. James D. Ball. During the groundbreaking ceremony, Ball reflected on the long-term impact the complex would have on students and the community.
“This field represents a vision that many of us have shared for years. A vision of Carroll Community College as a place where students can grow not only academically, but also physically, socially, and emotionally,” said Dr. Ball during the groundbreaking ceremony. “Athletics play a vital role in that growth, teaching teamwork, perseverance, and leadership, qualities that serve our students well beyond the classroom. This complex will be a place where students compete, where families gather, and where our community comes together.”
College officials say the new facility will not only support Carroll’s athletic programs but also serve as a destination for community recreation, tournaments, regional competitions, and special events that attract visitors to Carroll County. The project reflects collaboration among Carroll Community College, Carroll County Government, corporate sponsors, donors, and community partners committed to expanding educational and recreational opportunities in the region.
Community members are invited to attend the kickoff celebration and remain for both soccer matches. Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP in advance through the College’s registration page.
