A Stitch in Time, A Paw in Heart

Twice a month, on quiet Wednesday afternoons, the community cat room at the Humane Society of Carroll County transforms into something truly special. A warm hum of conversation mixes with the soft clicking of knitting needles and the occasional purr or playful meow. This is Catknits—a bimonthly event where volunteers gather to knit, crochet, and connect with adoptable cats.

Blankets and mats in every shade and stitch pattern slowly come to life as attendees sit cross-legged or perched on cozy chairs. These handmade pieces are destined for the cats’ cages and lounging areas, offering comfort to animals waiting for their forever homes. But Catknits is about more than just crafting—it’s about connection, both human and feline.

“I found this group on Facebook, as a self taught crocheter and animal lover I thought, this looks perfect“ says Stacey as she attends her first event. “They all have their own personalities…you can’t go wrong with kitties and crafts.”

The event was born in 2015 out of a simple idea by the then volunteer and fundraising coordinator now Director of the Humane Society of Carroll County Karen Baker, “having people quietly knit or crochet near them helps them open up. The goal was to bring more people into our organization when we first began, and this has been a success ever since” Baker explains.

Indeed, over the years, many Catknits attendees have witnessed special moments of trust—a timid cat curling up in a lap uninvited, a purr rumbling against the backdrop of yarn being pulled through a loop. These simple acts of companionship can make all the difference.

The room is filled with such stories. Newcomers are always welcomed with open arms (and paws), regardless of skill level. In fact, many show up just to learn. The environment is relaxed, no-pressure, and filled with laughter and the occasional tangled ball of yarn being chased by a curious kitten.

As the event winds down, the mats are collected, destined for cages and play areas throughout the shelter. Some attendees linger, reluctant to leave the warmth of the space. Others promise to return—and to bring friends.

The message of Catknits is clear: you don’t need to be an expert crafter to make a difference. Just bring a ball of yarn, a little patience, and a lot of heart.
