Governor Wes Moore is reminding Marylanders that the state’s annual Tax-Free Shopping Week is officially underway, running from Sunday, August 10 through Saturday, August 16. This annual initiative provides Maryland families with an opportunity to save money on essential purchases during the back-to-school season, while also boosting local businesses.
“Whether you’re gearing up for back-to-school season or looking to refresh your wardrobes, Maryland’s annual tax-free week is a great opportunity for families to save on clothing, shoes, and backpacks,” said Gov. Moore. “In partnership with Comptroller Lierman and the Maryland General Assembly, we’re helping Marylanders have a little extra breathing room this summer while supporting local businesses through their tax-free purchases.”
During the tax holiday, Maryland’s 6% state sales tax is waived on qualifying clothing and footwear items priced under $100 per item. The tax exemption applies to both in-store and online purchases, making it accessible for shoppers across the state. In addition, the first $40 of the purchase price of a backpack or bookbag is also tax-exempt, offering additional savings for families preparing for the school year.
This initiative is part of the state’s broader effort to provide financial relief during key times of the year and to reinforce Maryland’s commitment to accessible education and economic growth.
