The Veterans Independence Project (VIP) expanded its reach Tuesday, officially unveiling the Bill Murphy shuttle service during a ceremony at the organization’s headquarters.
The event, held at 1 p.m. amid mid-90-degree temperatures, marked the formal transition of the transportation program from Bill Murphy. The service is designed to provide veterans who are unable to drive with transportation to medical appointments and other essential errands.
Jason Sidock, executive director of the Veterans Independence Project, welcomed the sweating but enthusiastic crowd by tracing the history of the initiative. He noted that Bill Murphy was integral in launching the program alongside a grant from the Kahlert Foundation.
“Bill and his team were essential in helping shuttle veterans to and from medical appointments,” Sidock said, highlighting the necessity of the service for those who have lost their mobility.
During the ceremony, VIP Chief Operating Officer Mike Pennington thanked the attendees and praised Kohn Creative for designing and applying the graphics to the van in record time before the unveiling.
The transition received praise from local leaders and partners. Jacie Mathias spoke regarding the importance of keeping the shuttle service under the umbrella of the Community Foundation of Carroll County to ensure its longevity.
“I am so excited for this transition to occur,” Mathias said.
Several local dignitaries attended the launch, including Carroll County Commissioners Joe Vigliotti, Tom Gordon III, and Susan Krebs. Also in attendance were Ellen Finnerty Myers, executive director of the Kahlert Foundation, and Frank A. Valenti Jr., one of the founders of the Veterans Independence Project, who was on hand to observe the program’s growth.
The shuttle service will continue to focus on removing transportation barriers for veterans throughout the region, ensuring they have reliable access to healthcare and community resources.
