In a celebration of bold flavors, family legacy, and entrepreneurial ingenuity, Gilbert’s Premium Beef Jerky emerged victorious at this year’s Carroll Biz Challenge, claiming the prestigious $10,000 Grand Prize on Thursday evening August 14 at the Carroll County Arts Council.
Presented by the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, hosted this year by Jon Weetman and Hannah Brookfield, the annual Biz Challenge spotlights local businesses ready to transform Carroll County’s economic landscape through innovation and community spirit. After a spirited final round, Gilbert’s Beef Jerky—crafted with passion using locally sourced ingredients—rose to the top, impressing judges with their unique approach to elevating a classic snack.
Founder and CEO Christopher Fong, the entrepreneurial backbone behind the brand, expressed his gratitude and feelings during the process, “I was nervous to be honest, I didn’t know if I could do it,” says Fong. “My goal is to have Gilbert’s in the hands of people all over the world. I’ve already have 10 retailers reach out to me in the past 24 hours since the win.”
In addition to the grand prize, the winner receives a generous professional-services package valued at thousands of dollars, including marketing support, legal and accounting services, promotional airtime, and more—providing a launchpad for sustainable growth.
Each year, the Biz Challenge draws in between 30 – 60 entries, from tech startups and wellness services to creative lifestyle brands and performance art concepts. Five finalists are selected in mid‑July to advance to the live finale. Beyond the grand prize, the competition also awards a $2,025 People’s Choice Award, determined by audience votes during the live event, which was also won by Fong. A $2,000 United Way of Central Maryland Change Maker Award was awarded to Sober Livin’, based on social impact.
