A South Carroll High School senior received a surprise of a lifetime this week when officials from McDaniel College arrived at his classroom to present him with a full four-year scholarship.
Ryan Baity was surprised during his AP Calculus class by McDaniel’s dean of admissions and financial aid, Jill Centofanti, admissions counselor Sydney Lipsman and the college’s mascot, the Green Terror, as he was named one of five Dorsey Scholars for the Class of 2030.
The Dorsey Scholars Program is the college’s highest academic honor, awarding recipients full tuition, room and board for all four years. Students are selected from McDaniel’s applicant pool based on academic excellence and leadership potential.

Baity, a senior at South Carroll High School, is recognized as a dedicated student who has excelled academically and demonstrated leadership in his community. He has also interned with the National Security Agency and participated in the Carroll County Scholars program, which provides college guidance and support to local students.
He is one of five students selected for the prestigious scholarship, which is funded through a $6.7 million estate gift from alumnus Philip Henry Dorsey, the largest scholarship gift in the college’s history.
Dorsey Scholars are considered academic leaders on campus and serve as ambassadors for the college, with access to unique academic and leadership opportunities.
Baity joins fellow recipients from Maryland and Pennsylvania as part of the incoming Class of 2030.
