Sykesville, MD. — Hundreds of residents gathered along Main Street on Saturday to celebrate Sykesville’s recognition as a winner of the Great American Main Street Award, marking the occasion with a community block party.
The prestigious national honor, announced April 18, recognizes the town’s successful efforts in historic preservation and economic revitalization.
During the celebration, Mayor Stacy Link and Julie Della-Maria, executive director of the Downtown Sykesville Connection, took to the stage to reflect on the town’s progress and thank the volunteers and business owners who fueled the resurgence.
“This award is a national recognition of Main Street excellence — but excellence doesn’t happen by accident,” Link said. “It happens when people choose to care, when they choose to collaborate, [and] when they choose to believe that a small town can be both historic and forward-looking.”
The event featured a unique multimedia experience after high winds prevented organizers from using a traditional large outdoor screen. Borrowing a concept from “silent discos,” Link instructed the crowd to scan QR codes posted on telephone poles that took them to a commemorative video on YouTube.
On the mayor’s count of three, the crowd pressed play simultaneously on their mobile devices while the audio was broadcast over the town’s Main Street loudspeaker system. The synchronized moment resulted in a wave of applause and cheers across the downtown corridor.
Della-Maria said the town’s success was built on balancing technical strategy with community spirit.
“Sykesville learned to master both the art and the science of the Main Street approach,” Della-Maria said. “The science is in the data-driven decisions… but the art is remembering what gives Main Street life. It’s the understanding that this work is powered by people, for people.”
A second QR code provided attendees with a video message from Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, who congratulated the town on its achievement and its role in the state’s economy.
The Great American Main Street Award is given annually to communities that demonstrate exceptional success in using the Main Street Approach to transform their traditional commercial districts. For Sykesville, the award validates years of investment in green spaces and diverse local programming.
“Every voice, every story, and every contribution helps build a downtown people don’t just visit but deeply love,” Della-Maria said.
