Carroll County Government and seven municipalities have launched an interactive digital StoryMap project as part of the nationwide America 250 celebration, highlighting local history, culture and landmarks across the county.
The new “Journey Through 250 Years of Local History” webpage features a series of StoryMaps created using ESRI’s StoryMaps platform. The project showcases historic sites throughout Carroll County through interactive maps paired with written narratives and optional audio recordings.
Users can scroll through guided story cards that move from site to site automatically or independently explore points of interest across participating communities.
The initiative was developed through a collaboration between Carroll County Economic Development, the Carroll County Downtowns organization and the county’s GIS Division, which provided technical support and mapping expertise. The StoryMaps highlight historic homes, monuments, plaques, architectural landmarks and other notable sites that reflect the heritage and development of each municipality.
Officials said the project is intended to make local history more accessible and engaging for residents, students and visitors while commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary.
“That we celebrate our nation’s historic 250th anniversary is a testament to the American way of life, and a reflection of the millions of Americans who have contributed to that history,” Board of County Commissioners President Joseph Vigliotti said in a statement. “Many of those Americans were citizens of Carroll County, and the StoryMap allows us to share the experiences of the places and people who helped to write our American story.”
“This project brings our shared story to life in a way that is both educational and inspiring,” said Denise Beaver, director of Carroll County Economic Development. “As we celebrate 250 years, the Carroll County StoryMap gives residents a chance to connect with the places and people who shaped our communities — and invites a new generation to discover our history.”
The StoryMap is available free to the public through the Carroll County Tourism website. Officials also encouraged residents and visitors to participate in additional countywide America 250 events and activities listed on the Carroll 250 webpage.
